September gathering for Class of 71

Our monthly coffee hour for September is Tuesday, September 28th at Common Ground in Burlington! We generally meet from 5ish to 7ish but people arrive all during that time. Come on over and visit around the big table! We love to see everyone!!

And we'll probably discuss our 40-year reunion coming up on July 9th, 2011. Have you marked your calendar?

S-W Museum Founders Days

Saturday, Sept. 11, the Sedro-Woolley Museum hosted the 1914 Bank Robbery Reenactment as part of Founders Days! On Murdock Street in front of the Museum (the old Tradewell building) and across from the old City Hall (now owned by Janicki Industries) they conducted the reenactment as Theater in the Round. Sort of.

Here are photos of the event - starting with the "extras" performing a quiet Saturday morning in 1915 in Sedro-Woolley (including local payday which prompted quite a few trips to the bar). Then, the five robbers rob the bank! Then, they are foiled (and killed) by local law, which isn't exactly how it happened in real life...Then, the bags of money turn out to be candy for all the kids!! It was a beautiful day for the skit and it was well-attended by locals.

Downtown changes

Here are a few downtown sights from September 5th. Note two new businesses that have opened recently: A furniture store (in the old JC Penney/Bus Jungquist building) in the same retail space where we had the amazing quilt show in June! Also a downtown car wash at the corner of Ferry and Eastern (formerly a gas station but not for a long time).



And a couple of favorites - a beautiful hanging basket that is one of many in the downtown core, and a pretty geranium in a city-maintained flower bed.

We have a rainy Labor Day today but people seem to be out and about!

Annual pot luck at Gary's - we look good!

We had a fun, relaxing pot luck and visit tonight! Weather was cool but Gary has a gazebo with outdoor heater and we all sat around it and were toasty. Great food, great friends! You wish you were there. Took four group photos. This was the best one.

More Downtown Changes

Here are a few photos of downtown and the changes we see:

The old Courier Times location has been vacant for a while, since their moved their offices to the new Skagit Valley Herald corporate offices in Mount Vernon.

A second hand store (with consignment?) is open in the old Duchess location - I think it's called Re Youz It.















A new store - new in the last couple of weeks - called Simply Silver & More - has opened on the left of the Courier's old location. The other storefront at that location is a church office - Christ the King church (they have no building of their own - they have services at the community center).

Downtown Sedro-Woolley Changes

There are some significant changes to the retail landscape downtown these days. The first one I'll bring to your attention is that Oliver Hammer moved next door! They are now located in the old True Value storefront, as of their move last night.

Drummonds, who owned and closed the True Value over the past few months, also own a part of the Oliver Hammer business. So they made use of their building by moving Oliver Hammer in! So today is their first day open in the new location. The old location looks quite empty. Stand by to see what goes in there!
