Loggerodeo Parade Stars Class of 1971!!

Here we are at the Loggerodeo Parade on our "float"!  This is a flatbed trailer procured for us by Donna Flack Beland (thanks!) and decorated, hayed, and pulled by JB Bryson (thanks!).  This is a BIG TRADITION in Sedro-Woolley - classes having a reunion are expected to have a parade entry.  For major reunions this is de rigueur.  But any class can have a parade entry - that class of 1964 always seems to be in it!!

22 intrepid members of the Class of 71 turned out for the event:  JB Bryson, Sue Ann Butt Bryson, Susy Thompson Sanders, Shirley Hooper Knapp, Susan Parker Swetman, Donna Flack Beland, Joel Woiwod, Darlene Comstock Woiwod, Brad Warfield, Frank Handy, Sally Hendricks Tucker, Judy Johnson, Keith Sorestad, Mark Stendal, Bob Stiles, Dennis Talley, Jim Kallio, Debra Wagar Kallio, Paula Wilcox Brunn, Leilani Waidelich Morrison, Dale Huggins, and we picked up John Hunter en route!

Here are a few photos.  I'm expecting more...

Waiting for the parade to start!

Waving to all the people!

This last photo is our view from the parade - of beautiful Hammer Heritage Square in downtown Sedro-Woolley!  At the intersection of Ferry and Metcalf.  Were you there?

The Class of 1971, in cooperation with the SWHS Alumni Association, is proud to announce the winners in our scholarship program for 2011. This year we have awarded scholarships to three SWHS graduates who are pursuing academic career paths and one student following a vocational career path. Selected by a committee of Class of 1971 members, these students are part of the third annual scholarship awards and we are so proud to have selected:

Kristin Huggins Kristin will graduate with the SWHS class of 2011 and plans to attend the University of Washington studying Graphic and Web Design. She has volunteered as yearbook editor for her high school and for an elementary school, and is an accomplished Girl Scout. Kristin is the daughter of Meriden and Pat Huggins of Sedro-Woolley.

Chelsea Seidel A member of the SWHS Class of 2010, Chelsea currently attends Eastern Washington University in the Nursing and ROTC programs. She has volunteered at a local community kitchen in Sedro-Woolley and for various youth wrestling tournaments and clinics. Chelsea is the daughter of Chris and Rogene Seidel of Sedro-Woolley.

Roslyn Gober A graduate in the SWHS Class of 2009, Roslyn attends the University of Rochester and is majoring in Biomedical Engineering with a concentration in Cell and Tissue Engineering. She volunteers with a group that raises funds for the National Kidney Foundation, has been making quilts for Haiti, and she plays the trombone in various college ensembles. She is the daughter of Richard and Paula Helinski of Mount Vernon.

Markas Harker A graduate in the SWHS Class of 2011, Markas plans to attend Skagit Valley College to study Welding. He has volunteered at the Big Lake Fire Department and completed other volunteer opportunities through Sedro-Woolley High School. He is the son of Mariah and Shannon Dugger of Mount Vernon.

40 Years of Fun - Class of 1971

Plz Note: The reunion info is distributed in a monthly e'mail that goes to all SWHS Class of 71 people who are on our distribution list. If you're not getting the e'mail - you still can! Contact us via this blog.

Our 40-year reunion is July 9th, after the SWHS Alumni Assn all class-picnic.
The all-class picnic starts at 11 a.m. at Riverfront Park. $15 per person.
Our reunion starts at 5 p.m. at JB and Sue Bryson’s. Also $15 per person.
If you want to know more about the all-class picnic, send me an e’mail. Prepay for both events.

We’re having salmon, baked potatoes, salads, and dessert. We will be asking people to bring salads/side dishes/bread. The rest we can provide out of the $15. Gary Rothenbuhler is cooking the salmon!

We’re also providing some non-alcoholic beverages, table service, and background music. You are welcome to bring the beverage of your choice!

Yes, we’ll need help setting up and taking down.

We decided on strawberry shortcake for dessert. We’ll get one of those 5-gallon buckets of berries and some shortcake or other cake and whipped topping. And people can assemble their own and add sugar or not.

Bring your cameras. We will have a “photo area” and will probably also have a photographer on hand.

We’ll stay and visit as late as we can stay up…

An e’mail invitation and a hard copy invitation will go out about mid-May. That’s when it will be time to pay.

The Alumni Assn newsletter will go out about mid-April and I’ll forward it to you as an e'mail with pdf attachment. There will be picnic info in it.

There WILL be an entry in the Loggerodeo parade for our class, so plan to meet at the parade assembly area about 10 a.m. or so on the 4th of July. We haven’t acquired a trailer/hay bales yet, but we’ll keep working on that.

There will very likely be a coffee hour on the Thursday before the reunion, during the day, mostly for the benefit of those traveling in to the area from far away! Stay tuned for that info.

Right now we have contact info of one kind or another for 135 people (not all have e’mail) and information on the deaths of 23. The list of folks we're looking for was sent to all e'mail recipients on March 23.

We'll put together a "booklet" after the reunion with info for each individual - probably in MS Publisher and probably available via CD or hard copy.

We are looking for about 112 more people who were in our class - those who graduated or didn't graduate with us (some moved away before graduation) are all welcome to attend our reunion!

Keep in touch! Our big day will be here soon!

Class of 71 scholarships for SWHS graduates

Class of 1971 will once again offer two $2500 scholarships to S-WHS graduates during 2011.

One scholarship is designated for a student pursuing an academic degree and one is for a student pursuing a vocational education.
Applications are available from S-WHS or State Street High School, or by inquiring via Classof71scholarships@comcast.net. Deadline for applications is the same as the S-WHS Alumni Association’s program, January 31, 2011.

Scholarship requirements are included in the application package; applicants are encouraged to read the instructions carefully and to prepare an electronic submission. A committee of Class of 71 members reviews and scores all applications to determine the winners.
