SWHS Class of 1971 scholarships now accepting applications

Sedro-Woolley High School Class of 1971 is pleased to announce that two new scholarships are now available for 2009. Offered in conjunction with the Sedro-Woolley High School Alumni Association, the Class of 1971 scholarships are available to graduates of Sedro-Woolley High School or State Street High School, regardless of the year of graduation.

Each scholarship is for $2500; one is exclusively for students pursuing an academic degree and the other is for students pursuing vocational education. Awards are competitive and the due date for applications is April 15, 2009.

Bus Jungquist, S-W businessman, passes away

Another icon of Sedro-Woolley is gone. “Bus” Jungquist, owner of the furniture store in downtown Sedro-Woolley from 1967 to 2008, was a big supporter of Sedro-Woolley and our high school. He passed away on April 1, 2009 at the age of 91.

Bus graduated from Burlington-Edison High School in 1936 and attended WSU for one year. He married his college sweetheart, Bernice, in 1939 and served in the Army from 1943 until 1946. He worked in several business in Skagit County (including owning Bus’s Grocery on Jameson Street in S-W) until he opened Bus Jungquist Furniture in 1967. It was an anchor store in our downtown, long before the concept of “malls” and “anchor stores” became familiar. He served as the distribution center for miniature wooden hope chests provided by the Lane Furniture Company to all graduating senior girls and we all made that shy trip into the store to ask for ours. It was such a great pleasure for him and the Lane representative became one of his closest friends.

He was an active Rotarian and belonged to George Baldridge Post #43 American Legion and Trinity United Presbyterian Church. He was a mainstay at Joy’s Bakery downtown where we all still go to “see and be seen”. He served the city and his community in many other ways. His full obit is available at:

SWHS photos

Here are a couple of photos I took today, on the first day that there has been any sunshine and dry weather of note. I had been meaning to post photos of SWHS the way it looks today and these are two photos of the main building. The modern side faces Third Street (and the gym) and the old "Union High School" entrance faces north, on what used to be Nelson Street. Now it is a nice concrete-paver mall with lights and some outdoor seating.




















In 1969 when I broke my ankle, skiing, I left my crutches at the top of these stairs and rode all the way out to the L&M Drive In with friends before I realized that I hadn't brought the crutches...luckily, we retrieved them without incident. That was 40 years ago this month. Ankle is fine, thanks for asking.

I also went to the SWHS Alumni Association meeting today where we discussed upcoming events. The Geranium Sale/Bake Sale is scheduled for May 2nd. It is a major fund-raiser for the Alumni Assn's scholarship fund. Also the all-class picnic will be Saturday, July 11th. Be sure to get that on your calendar and I'll let you know when to purchase tickets. It's a fun gathering at Riverfront Park for graduates of all years and friends. It will be catered again this year by Joy's Bakery - Janet and Mike Joy.

The monthly gathering of Class of 71 will be Tuesday, March 31st at Common Ground in Burlington. 5ish to 7ish. Come on over and visit around the big table! Maybe we'll watch Nancy knit!

Coach Spud Walley passes away

Spud Walley passed away on March 4, 2009 as the result of a stroke on February 19th. He taught in the SW school district and served as a member of city council for 16 years and then Mayor for 20 (nonconsecutive) years. But we remember when he began to coach the SWHS wrestling team in 1969 and put SW on the state wrestling map.

His teams won the league title 12 times, the regional title 10 years in a row, and state championships in 1976, 1981, and 1983.

Services will be Saturday, March 14th at noon PDT at the SWHS gymnasium. The service will be webcast - check www.lemleychapel.com for details. His full obituary is also available at the Lemley web site.

So thanks, Spud, for your dedication to SW students. You were part of our high school experience.

Some updates and some tidbits

We had a small but quality group at the monthly Class of 71 coffee hour last night. We seemed to have a knitting theme - Nancy brought her new project and actively worked on it through the evening. Fascinating - like watching the flames on the hearth. A friendly person in the deli came over to see Nancy's knitting and we all introduced ourselves and admitted to an affinity for the fiber arts. Not a requirement for attending! But lots of us do handwork and sometimes bring a sample.

Remember that our coffee hour - rather two hours - is on the LAST Tuesday of the month at Common Ground (on the Pease road) in Burlington from 5 to 7 p.m. The next one is March 31. Come on over and visit around the big table!

In other news, I attended the SWHS Alumni Association meeting today and picked up a few tidbits of news. The All-Class Picnic will be Saturday, July 11th this year. Plan to come! It is a riot to see people from all the classes. This year they'll require a pre-payment of the cost. So when it gets closer to the date and we know the exact amount, you can give me a check and I'll deliver it, or you can mail it in. To manage costs and have more money for their scholarship program, the Association is starting to send their quarterly newsletter only to paid members. The membership fee is $10 per year - see prior post for information. You should join it.

Also, the Alumni Association has a few other important dates coming up:

Saturday, March 21st - all-class meeting at the Sedro-Woolley Senior Center. 2:00 p.m. This is when they gather information from the various classes about how they would like to participate and what they would like to see happen in the Association. An important step in active participation.

Saturday, May 2nd - Geranium Sale begins. You can pre-order. This is one of the major fund-raisers of the year.

They continue to have general membership meetings on the fourth Wednesday of each month at the Senior Center. 1:00 p.m.

Finally, Jerry Sommerseth's annual Beethoven Concert is normally held in December on the Sunday closest to Beethoven's Birthday (Dec. 16th). Last Dec. it was postponed. A new date has been set! Sunday, March 22nd. If you are near SW on that day, be sure to come. I think it will be at 3:00 p.m. but watch the paper. This is always an SRO event so arrive early to hear local folks perform great music! We all know that Sedro-Woolley is a pretty musical town.

Where were you when...

Kathy Butler and I have discussed several times that we were in the library at Central School, selecting books on our lunch hour, when we learned that JFK had been assassinated. Miss Jacobs came in to tell Miss Blackburn and they both started to cry. Then, the bell rang and we went back to class where we learned a little more and also discovered that we were being dismissed for the day.

So here's my question for Class of 71: Where were you at that fateful hour and what details do you remember? We probably need to capture these memories for later generations.
