S-W Museum Founders Days

Saturday, Sept. 11, the Sedro-Woolley Museum hosted the 1914 Bank Robbery Reenactment as part of Founders Days! On Murdock Street in front of the Museum (the old Tradewell building) and across from the old City Hall (now owned by Janicki Industries) they conducted the reenactment as Theater in the Round. Sort of.

Here are photos of the event - starting with the "extras" performing a quiet Saturday morning in 1915 in Sedro-Woolley (including local payday which prompted quite a few trips to the bar). Then, the five robbers rob the bank! Then, they are foiled (and killed) by local law, which isn't exactly how it happened in real life...Then, the bags of money turn out to be candy for all the kids!! It was a beautiful day for the skit and it was well-attended by locals.

Downtown changes

Here are a few downtown sights from September 5th. Note two new businesses that have opened recently: A furniture store (in the old JC Penney/Bus Jungquist building) in the same retail space where we had the amazing quilt show in June! Also a downtown car wash at the corner of Ferry and Eastern (formerly a gas station but not for a long time).

And a couple of favorites - a beautiful hanging basket that is one of many in the downtown core, and a pretty geranium in a city-maintained flower bed.

We have a rainy Labor Day today but people seem to be out and about!

Annual pot luck at Gary's - we look good!

We had a fun, relaxing pot luck and visit tonight! Weather was cool but Gary has a gazebo with outdoor heater and we all sat around it and were toasty. Great food, great friends! You wish you were there. Took four group photos. This was the best one.

See you at the coffee hour next month!

More Downtown Changes

Here are a few photos of downtown and the changes we see:

The old Courier Times location has been vacant for a while, since their moved their offices to the new Skagit Valley Herald corporate offices in Mount Vernon.

A second hand store (with consignment?) is open in the old Duchess location - I think it's called Re Youz It.

A new store - new in the last couple of weeks - called Simply Silver & More - has opened on the left of the Courier's old location. The other storefront at that location is a church office - Christ the King church (they have no building of their own - they have services at the community center).

And there are other new businesses that are not on Metcalf downtown! You can find the full listing of Chamber members at www.sedro-woolley.com

Downtown Sedro-Woolley Changes

There are some significant changes to the retail landscape downtown these days. The first one I'll bring to your attention is that Oliver Hammer moved next door! They are now located in the old True Value storefront, as of their move last night.

Drummonds, who owned and closed the True Value over the past few months, also own a part of the Oliver Hammer business. So they made use of their building by moving Oliver Hammer in! So today is their first day open in the new location. The old location looks quite empty. Stand by to see what goes in there!

Oliver Hammer open at new location with handmade sign.

Old Oliver Hammer location is empty.

Old location on the left, new location under the True Value sign.

Sedro-Woolley sights

Things have perked up in S-W now that the weather is more seasonal and people are doing things outdoors! Here are some photos for you:

This is the old JC Penney building, which was also the Jungquist Furniture store most recently. Now it is owned by Pat Farrell, who will place retail tenants inside. It has 17,000 total square feet on three floors! Northeast corner of State and Metcalf.

Here is JB Bryson, who seems to ride his motorcycle in the rain or shine! The background building is the old S-W City Hall building, which is now owned by Janicki Industries. The new city hall was featured on a previous post!

Here is one of the great downtown murals painted on the side of the Holland Drug Store building.

Clear Lake alums

If you're from Clear Lake, or ever passed through it...you'll be glad to know that they have a lovely sign now!

We spent our formative years at the Clear Lake swimming area. It's where we learned about the softness of lake water for swimming and not to run on the dock. And where we dared each other to go off the high dive! And went down the tube slide! Back before Wild Waves was even a remote high concept.

Tulip Season - a visit to Tulip Town

Everybody (and their cat) is posting photos of La Conner tulips on the Internet...so I'll only post one. The purple tulips were my favorite this year. I enjoyed my quick visit to Tulip Town and left a few dollars with the vendors...

S-WHS Gym updates

I was at the Wood Fest this afternoon, to see the tremendous woodworking that the S-WHS shop class does these days - plus vendors and silent auction, etc., all in the name of WOOD.

There is also some great artwork in the gym! I took my camera and was able to capture a few things - which I will post as we go along.

But for today, I'll spotlight the Spud Walley saying that is painted on the inside wall, over the main gym entrance:

SWHS Alumni Assn - recent news

The Sedro-Woolley High School Alumni Association has a new blog!

www.swhsalumni.blogspot.com

OK, I admit, I did it. But there are a lot of commercial "class reunion-type" web sites out there that are confusing our alums with their claims to be the official site. They're not.

I have been attending the S-WHS Alumni Assn meetings and I put up the blog under their auspices. It is likely that we will have a true web site in the future but right now the blog will do what we need done - to give alumni a place to go for news and contact info!

The next events that you should be aware of are the geranium sale and the All-Class Picnic!

Geranium Sale - Saturday, May 1, at the park next to the Sedro-Woolley Community Center. They sell lovely geranium plants and tomato plants $3.00 each. And some baked goods - always popular - as priced. Come early because all of these items tend to run out! If you want to pre-order (and many do) let me know and I'll put you in touch with the event chair.

All-Class Picnic - Saturday, July 10th, at Riverfront Park in Sedro-Woolley. 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
This is the BIG event of the year for SWHS Alums! A lovely lunch - prepurchase of lunch tickets is required - $15 per person. Hamburger or chicken. Lunch is served at 1 p.m. Lots of mingling, visiting, photos, etc.! The Association sells raffle tickets to benefit the scholarship fund. Class members sit together - if they want to! Some classes put up their own "tents". Some classes put up a sign (we have one - see it on this page!). Many alums travel for great distances to attend! Put it on your calendar today and I'll put up contact info for ticket purchase when the tickets are ready.

That's the news from downtown Sedro-Woolley. More as it develops!

Here's a photo of Annette Vochatzer Harter and Keith that I took recently at a Camp Kirby event. The S-W Rotary Club refreshed Bluebird Lodge at camp and named it for Fred Vochatzer who has given so many years of service to Camp Fire.

The Eagles are in town!

“When thou seest an eagle, thou seest
a portion of genius; lift up thy head!”
William Blake, The Marriage of Heaven and Hell

In 1976, the Nature Conservancy and the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife created the
Skagit River Bald Eagle Natural Area. In winter, bald eagles now gather by the hundreds to feed on returning salmon. This project includes another six landowning partners and has preserved more than 9,000 acres of eagle habitat, including more than 10 miles of river and thousands of acres of forests. About 1,300 acres are owned and managed by the Nature Conservancy. www.nature.org

Sedro-Woolley City Hall

If you haven't visited Sedro-Woolley for a while, you may not realize that we built a beautiful new "city hall" on north Metcalf Street (due north of downtown). As a municipal center, it houses the police department, fire department, courts, and city administrative functions. It's near the old ball park where we used to have the carnival at Loggerodeo time.

The old city hall on Murdock, across from the museum, has been purchased by Janicki Industries for future use. They have strong community ties and will use the old building to its best advantage.
