Monthly gathering - Nov. 25, 2008

We had a great group last night at Common Ground - with a couple of surprises!

Paula Wilcox Brunn was able to come and visit with us; on holiday from Colorado and home to S-W to visit family for Thanksgiving. She regaled us with stories of her visits to Costa Rica and here in the cold, wet NW we liked hearing those stories.

Bob Stiles also came to be part of the group - all the way from Marysville! Considering the traffic on I-5, that's an act of courage.

Jim and Debbie Kallio, Colleen Wilcox, and Sue Ann Bryson rounded out our group for the evening.

We missed everyone who wasn't there. Your next opportunity is Tuesday, Dec. 30th. It's always fun to catch up with our friends.

Take the opportunity to post a Class of 71 comment or shout-out on this blog. We want to hear from you!

Veteran's Day Parade in Sedro-Woolley

A "new tradition" in Sedro-Woolley is for the grade school kids to have a parade to show their appreciation for our veterans. The SWHS Band sets the marching pace and the SWPD and FD lead the way. Here are a few photos from the 2008 parade, which was held on Nov. 10th because there was no school on the 11th! Note that the Central School patrols were in uniform, too. Mary Purcell students also participate. They all walk from the schools, through downtown, and then back to the schools. A lovely moment in our small town.

2011 - our 40-year class reunion

2011 is just around the corner! Considering that we are already discussing the presidential election in 2012...exhausting, isn't it?

Class of 71 will be having a 40-year extravaganza in 2011 and here is something to think about:

Historically, SWHS classes had their reunions in August (I'm talking in the olden days, maybe 20 years ago). In the current times, more classes, including ours, have reunions closer to the 4th of July. Many people like to come to SW for Loggerodeo activities, and it could be convenient to have our reunion around that time.

July 4th falls on a Monday in 2011. That will be the day of the Loggerodeo Parade and Class of 71 will want to be in it!

The second Saturday in July is the 9th, and that is probably the date of the SWHS Alumni Association All-Class Picnic.

Some classes have been holding their reunions the same day or weekend as the all-class picnic. They reserve the small shelter at Riverfront Park (the all-class picnic uses the large shelter) and continue the festivities after 4 p.m. when the all-class picnic is over.

If we would prefer to have the reunion event closer to the 4th of July, we need to look at July 2 and/or 3.

Or go out to August or another time.

Just a few things to consider. It's not an emergency - yet! I'll be happy to compile people's opinions and suggestions about this and we can come to a decision later.

Alumni Association updates

A couple of updates about the SWHS Alumni Assn:

A new e'mail address has been established: swhsaa@wavecable.com

If you would like to be added to their e'mail database, just send them an e'mail - and include your class year - and they'll add you to the files.

They have published a calendar for 2009. In addition to their monthly meetings, here are some dates to note:

May 2nd - Spring Bake Sale and Geranium Sale - 9 a.m. -3 p.m. - SW Memorial Park Bldg (this is a tentative date).

July 11th - All Class Picnic - 12 noon to 4 p.m. - Riverfront Memorial Park

November 7th - Fall Bazaar - SW Senior Center

Consider joining the SWHS Alumni Assn!

Info about the SWHS Alumni Association

SWHS Alumni Association
Tuesday, Sept. 23rd, the SWHS Alumni Association had a couple of “informational meetings” and invited everyone to come and find out about the association and their activities. The SWHSAA is a 501(c)3 organization whose main purpose is to award Vocational Scholarships to SWHS grads. They have awarded 44 scholarships since 1996 and this year increased the amount of the award to $1500 each (from $1000). They fund-raise through the year by:

* Selling items at the Fall Bazaar (this year Nov. 1 at the Senior Center)
* Selling geraniums in the spring
* Selling tickets for door prizes at the All-Class picnic (2nd Saturday in July).
* Accepting cash donations (including memorial and celebratory donations).

Membership in the Association is $10 per year and membership dues are used for the expenses of the organization. They publish a mailed newsletter and are considering a transition to an e’mail version for those members who prefer the soft copy. Their mailing list is currently for 4500 newsletters, but their membership is eroding; the 2008 membership so far this year is 382. Class of ’71 currently has five paid members for 2008. (The classes of ’46 and ’50 currently have the most members.) Class of ’71 had six attendees at the All-Class Picnic. The Association is ready to make other changes and enhancements to increase membership and ensure that they can continue awarding Vocational Scholarships. But they need active participation from more classes.

Here’s what you can do:

* Join the Association. Membership year is from Jan. 1 to Dec. 31.
So if you send in membership dues now, be sure to specify the membership year you are paying for. Some people send in dues for more than one year at a time. See below. Attend meetings and work on a committee or two to ensure the continuing success of the Picnic and the Scholarship Program.

* Donate items for the Fall Bazaar and/or come and shop at the Bazaar. It was Saturday, Nov. 1 at the Senior Center in Sedro-Woolley. Plan for next year.

* Buy some geraniums in the spring from the Association.

* Donate a door prize for the All-Class Picnic.

* Attend the All-Class Picnic next July – Class of ’71 will be there and we’ll all sit together! We have a sign! Other classes were jealous of our sign…

Catching up with Class of 71

Mark your calendar! Our next coffee hour is at Common Ground in Burlington on Tuesday, November 25th. From 5ish to 7ish. Come on over and visit around the big table and have a latte!

I submitted an item about our coffee hours to the Skagit Valley Herald earlier this year and gave them the dates through the summer. I noticed that they're still printing the notice occasionally under "class news" and they put in the right date (last Tuesday of the month) so I'll just let them keep doing it. The item shows up in the Courier, too.

It has been so much fun to hear from Class of 71 members and to surprise them when I find them on the Internet and send an e'mail. If you are not on our monthly distribution list (about the coffee hour) and want to receive the reminders, plz let me know! If you have other e'mail addresses for class members that I don't have, plz send them to me!! Seriously, we're collecting up contact info for everyone. I believe that I have current contact info for 50+ class members, and with that we should be able to find everyone else. Don't be shy! Network!

See you Tuesday the 25th,

Judy J.

Welcome to the big experiment!

Class of 71 and friends:

We have been talking about having our own web site so this is the grand experiment to see if we can create and maintain it!

I hope everyone will access the site and add comments; we are spread far and wide in the world but I have learned that we love to keep in touch.

I'm living in Sedro-Woolley but guess what - lots of other Class of 71 members are, too! Or at least they're close by.

You may be aware that we are having "monthly" coffee hours on the LAST Tuesday of each month at Common Ground (on the Pease Road) in Burlington, from 5ish to 7ish. They close at 7. It has been fun to get together and visit. Occasionally we change the plan - twice we have met at Gary Rothenbuhler's house in S-W.

June 24, 2008

Give us a shout and let us know where you are! We're gearing up for that 40-year reunion and we want to make sure that everyone is located and invited.
